What is Community Organizing?

Community organizing is the process of building power by bringing people together to take collective action on issues that affect their lives. It's about identifying shared concerns, developing leaders from within the community, and creating sustainable structures for ongoing civic engagement. Unlike traditional advocacy, which often relies on experts speaking on behalf of others, community organizing centers the voices and leadership of those most directly impacted by injustice.

Core Principles of Effective Organizing

Successful community organizing is built on several foundational principles: Start where people are, not where you wish they were. Listen more than you speak. Build relationships based on trust and mutual respect. Identify and develop leaders from within the community. Focus on concrete, winnable campaigns that build momentum. Create structures that sustain beyond any single campaign or issue. Remember that organizing is about building long-term power, not just winning individual fights.

The One-to-One Conversation

At the heart of organizing is the one-to-one conversation—a relational meeting where organizers connect with community members to understand their concerns, identify potential leaders, and build trust. These aren't transactional interactions or recruitment pitches. They're genuine conversations where you learn someone's story, their values, what keeps them up at night, and what gives them hope. A good one-to-one uncovers self-interest (what motivates someone), identifies skills and capacity, and builds the foundation for collective action.

Mapping Your Community

Before you can organize, you need to understand your community's landscape. Who holds formal power? Who holds informal influence? What are the existing networks and relationships? Where do people already gather? What are the pressure points that could move decision-makers? Power mapping helps you identify allies, opponents, and persuadables. It reveals opportunities for leverage and helps you develop strategic campaigns that can actually win.
