about Delia Ramirez

MoveOn is Proud to Endorse Delia Ramirez for Congress!

Meet Delia Ramirez

Congresswoman Delia Ramirez represents Illinois’ 3rd district and is the first Latina Congresswoman from the Midwest. The daughter of working-class Guatemalan immigrants, Delia has spent her career as a legislator, social service director, and community leader, advocating for working families. In Congress, she serves as the Vice-Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security and is a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee.

Ready to Lead

Delia brings the same people-first values from her time in the Illinois State Legislature to Congress. She quickly introduced bipartisan legislation to support student veterans, co-led the Dream and Promise Act, and introduced legislation to protect tenants’ rights. Delia is focused on housing justice, healthcare for all, public education, community safety, and protecting the rights of women, the LGBTQ+ community, and immigrants. She is personally invested in immigration reform, advocating for DREAMers like her husband Boris, and fighting for comprehensive change.

Delivering Results for Families

Born in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin community and raised in Humboldt Park, Delia’s upbringing shaped her commitment to working families. Her mother crossed the border while pregnant, working multiple jobs to provide for the family. Her father also worked two jobs, alternating shifts to care for their children. These struggles sparked Delia’s passion for advocacy, leading her to work in non-profits for 18 years, including chairing the Latin United Community Housing Association.

In 2018, Delia was elected to the Illinois State House, rising to Majority Floor Leader and co-founding the Illinois Progressive Caucus. She successfully passed legislation expanding Medicaid to seniors, securing $450 million for affordable housing, protecting abortion rights, and creating an elected school board for Chicago.

Now in Congress, Delia continues to champion progressive values and serves as Co-Chair of the Strengthening Democracy Task Force. She lives in Chicago with her husband Boris and their golden retrievers, Lola and Milo.
