about Mark Pocan

MoveOn is Proud to Endorse Mark Pocan for Congress!

Meet Mark Pocan

Mark Pocan has established a reputation as an effective progressive leader, bringing his 14 years of experience in the Wisconsin State Assembly to Congress in 2013. Mark’s political journey began in blue-collar Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he delivered campaign literature door-to-door for his father, a long-time city alderman, at just eight years old. This early exposure to politics sparked his passion for public service.

Mark attended college in Madison and, after earning his journalism degree in 1986, opened his own small business, a union printing company he continues to run today. His active involvement with College Democrats at the University of Wisconsin-Madison led to his election to the Dane County Board of Supervisors in 1991, where he served for three terms. In 1998, he was elected to succeed his close friend Tammy Baldwin as the State Representative from the 78th District, and later, he succeeded her once again when she was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012.

Advocate for Progressive Causes

As a small business owner, union member, and lifelong advocate for progressive causes, Mark brings his unique blend of private and public sector experience to Congress. He serves as the Co-Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus and is a co-founder of the Labor Caucus. He is also the Chair Emeritus of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC). During his five terms in Congress, Mark has fought for access to public education, investment in clean energy, raising the minimum wage, and closing tax loopholes used by large corporations.

Mark is deeply committed to ensuring Wisconsin’s families have an economy that works for them. He supports strengthening social safety net programs, including Medicare, Social Security, and healthcare for vulnerable populations. He believes in upholding worker rights and ensuring that senior citizens can retire with dignity and security.

A Legislator Who Fights Fairly

Mark Pocan is known for his ability to bridge political divides while remaining steadfast in his progressive values. His leadership earned him the Congressional Progressive Caucus Newcomer of the Year Award in 2014. Mark and his husband, Phil, who married in Canada in 2006, reside in the Town of Vermont, Wisconsin.
