Meet Curtis Hertel

Curtis Hertel is a passionate advocate for Mid-Michigan, dedicated to finding bipartisan solutions that benefit everyone. As Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Director of Legislative Affairs, Curtis played a critical role in passing key legislation, including tax cuts for seniors and working families, expanding workers’ rights, and securing major investments in advanced manufacturing to bring good-paying jobs to Mid-Michigan. He was also instrumental in repealing Michigan’s archaic 1931 abortion ban, ensuring protections for women’s reproductive rights, even in cases of rape and incest.

Leading in Times of Crisis

Curtis Hertel’s personal connection to Michigan State University deepened after the tragic campus mass shooting, where his son was present. This tragedy motivated him to spearhead the passage of common-sense gun safety legislation, including red flag laws, safe storage laws, and extreme risk protection orders. As a proud Spartan, Curtis took immense pride in how the community came together to protect Michigan kids. His legislative efforts also include leading the fight to preserve Michigan’s status as a global leader in auto manufacturing, helping pass the bipartisan legislation that secured GM’s $6.5 billion investment in battery cell and electric vehicle plants in Mid-Michigan.

Commitment to Michigan’s Future

Throughout his career, Curtis has been a strong advocate for first responders, passing bipartisan legislation to provide ongoing medical assistance to firefighters who develop cancer due to exposure to toxic chemicals. As a former Ingham County Commissioner and Register of Deeds, he fought to expand access to affordable healthcare, lower prescription drug costs, and uncovered a major foreclosure fraud scandal, holding big banks accountable to protect Michigan homeowners. Curtis continues to prioritize cutting taxes for retirees, restoring manufacturing jobs, and protecting Michiganders’ rights and safety.

Curtis lives in East Lansing with his wife, Elizabeth, and their four children, continuing his tireless work for Mid-Michigan’s future.
