about Steven Horsford

MoveOn is Proud to Endorse Steven Horsford for Congress!

Meet Steven Horsford

Steven Horsford was born and raised in Las Vegas and has dedicated his life to championing his community. As the son of a single immigrant mother, Steven took on multiple jobs from a young age—delivering newspapers, making pizzas, and cleaning veterinary clinics after hours—to help support his mother and younger siblings. He was the first in his family to attend college, a testament to his belief in the value of hard work, which has shaped his career ever since.

Leadership in Nevada and Congress

Steven’s leadership journey began when he led Nevada’s largest career training program at the Culinary Training Academy, where he helped thousands of Nevadans secure good-paying jobs in hospitality and other high-demand industries. In 2004, he was elected to the Nevada State Senate and, in 2008, became the youngest and first African-American Majority Leader in state history. During this time, Steven worked across party lines to pass a balanced state budget amid some of the worst economic conditions in a generation.

Elected to Congress in 2012 to represent Nevada’s 4th District, Steven has never lost sight of his roots. He is focused on lowering the cost of living, creating opportunities for all Nevadans, and removing barriers to success. His legislative priorities include making housing more affordable, capping the price of insulin at $35, and reducing prescription drug costs for seniors.

Steven Horsford’s Legislative Accomplishments

In Congress, Steven has secured funding for Nevada’s schools, local police and fire departments, and rural infrastructure projects. He co-authored legislation that caps the price of insulin at $35 per month and limits out-of-pocket prescription drug costs for seniors to $2,000 annually. As Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Steven also introduced the HOME Act to protect homeownership from Wall Street speculation and worked to expand childcare programs for working families. His efforts to pass landmark infrastructure legislation have created thousands of good-paying jobs for Nevadans, further cementing his dedication to the people of his state.
